A diaper / sanitary napkin magnate dies, leaving four adult children to squabble over his fortune. Hilarity ensues. (audio) The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante: if you know a magic way to read a book but also save it FOREVER, can you please tell me? I finally caved on my attempt to save book four of my beloved Neapolitan quartet. (paperback) Kate Scott Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng: Literary fiction wrapped in a mystery that I originally read about on Goodreads. (Audiobook) Stars Beneath Us: Finding God in the Evolving Cosmos by Paul Wallace: A novel approach the science/faith conundrum from Fortress Press. (galley) Andi Miller Dietland by Sarai Walker: I held off reading this book for a while because I expected something fluffy and lighthearted. I couldnât have been more wrong. While this book is humorous and ironic, itâs the type of cultural criticism through fiction that only comes along once in a great while. Guerrilla warfare against men who objectify and abuse women, close examination of the mental and physical effects of conforming to beauty standards, and our weight-obsessed cultureWalker takes them all on and sets the place on fire. (e-galley) Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes: Itâs cacophonously lauded by my fellow Rioters, so I had to pick it up in my quest to think more about how we make a place for ourselves in the world. (ebook) Johann Thorsson This Census-Taker by China Miéville: just a few pages into the latest into this and already promises the best of Mieville; oddness, great prose and a lingering malice. Aickmanâs Heirs edited by Simon Strantzas. This is a collection of short stories in the style of Robert Aickman. It has low-key horror stories, reminding one of the classic Twilight Zone episodes. Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu: a forthcoming collection of short stories by the very talented Ken Liu. Simply put, a showcase of the finest that genre fiction currently has to offer. Edd McCracken A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James: The previous few winners of the Man Booker Prize (The Luminaries; The Narrow Road to the Deep North) have been my favourite books of their respective years. Thinking these guys must be onto something, Iâve just started last yearâs winner. Iâm already picking the grit of 1970s Kingston, Jamaica from between my teeth. (paperback) Eric Smith Meet Me Here by Bryan Bliss: Just about finished with Blissâ sophomore novel, and let me tell you, itâs a wonderfully moving, charming, and powerful novel about learning to choose for yourself. Meet Me Hereâs protagonist, Tom, is on the verge of heading off to the military, something his father has pushed him to do all his life⦠despite the fact that his brother, Jake, is utterly falling to pieces after his experience overseas. So he takes off, one night until he enlists, for an evening with his childhood best friend, who is wrestling with her own demons. Hard to put down, and addresses PTSD brilliantly. (ARC, Out May 31st with Greenwillow) E.H. Kern The Rebirths of Tao by Wesley Chu: Zipping through Wesley Chuâs Tao trilogy. The Rebirths of Tao is the third and final part and so far I am enjoying it as much as the previous two. Rebecca Hussey One Hundred Twenty-One Days by Michèle Audin, translated by Christiana Hills: Forthcoming in May from Deep Vellum Publishing. Audin is a mathematician and a member of Oulipo, a group of experimental French writers. How could I resist? (egalley) The Tsar of Love and Techno by Anthony Marra: my inspiration to read this came from this yearâs Tournament of Books and several recommendations for the audiobook version. (Audiobook) Emma Nichols Authority by Jeff VanderMeer: I read and loved Annihilation last year, but hadnât picked up the rest of the Southern Reach Trilogy; recently had the urge for a good bureaucratic fiction read, and now Iâm back in Area X and loving it. Renewable Energy And The Global Warming - 1542 Words
The Earth is dying at an extreme rate and will continue to do so unless we switch to renewable energy, to help fight and prevent the effects of using fossil fuels. Many people will say that we need to switch to renewable energy and that our planet is suffering from global warming, while others will say that global climate change is a natural occurring event that does not to be worried about. Many people in the modern generation have grown up with a big emphasis on how we need to change our daily habits in order to protect the world and preserve the life on it. The reason as to why many people will say this, is because for about the last fifty yearsââ¬â¢ scientist have been saying that we need to cut back on our fossil fuels and use moreâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The hope is that when that time comes, the people of that era are advanced enough to be able to provide for themselves without the need of the same resources that we need everyday. An important question to ask ourselve s, is what if the people donââ¬â¢t have the technology and need the resources we use everyday, but they won t have as much or any if we continue to destroy our planet. The fact that we know our fossil fuels are limited and yet we still use them is crazy, in greenhouse living one article states that ââ¬Å"Whether you believe that there are hundreds of years or just a few decades left of this resource, the fact remains that it is a finite resource. At some point, fossil fuels are going to either be gone or they are going to become too expensive to realistically use.â⬠(Epstein ) This quote summarizes the overall issue with the use of fossil fuels and that is that they will run out. The question for that is, are we ready for when that day comes and we have to make the change from fossil fuels to renewable energy. As of right now, we have fossil fuels and donââ¬â¢t have to switch to renewable energy, but when the day comes, that the oil drilling stops producing and the coal minds are empty is the day we will have to sit back and say are we ready for this. My Life as a Soundtrack free essay sample
My Life as a Soundtrack Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if there was to be a soundtrack playing in the background of it all. The soundtrack would just continue to play making sure to capture every moment in my life a significant one. When approaching a crush the soundtrack would be sure to pick a song that explained exactly how I was feeling, or on the days when nothing seems to be going my way, music that I like to call ââ¬Å"thinking musicâ⬠would continually play. Although having a soundtrack playing in the background of my life is an impossible idea to happen, there are still those certain songs that seem to sing in my head for every moment I have experienced in my life. From the days that seem perfect, to the days that have never ending misfortunes, there is almost one song to capture and describe every single one of the moments. We will write a custom essay sample on My Life as a Soundtrack or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page When thinking of my childhood an endless stream of memories comes spilling to my mind. As a child the word love became a whole new meaning to me. Being naive and innocent during my childhood made me see the world as a happy, go-lucky, loving place. In the song ââ¬Å"Love Todayâ⬠, by Mika the chorus lyrics; Everybodyââ¬â¢s gonna love today, gonna love today, Everybodyââ¬â¢s gonna love today, gonna love today, Anyway you want to; anyway youââ¬â¢ve got to, Love, love me, love, love me, love, love, (1-4) really defines a part of my childhood. The lyrics relate to the times when all of the kids on my block would hang out together everyday for hours at a time. Whether it was playing with sidewalk chalk, rolling down steep hills, until hives would appear on our stomachs, eating grass at the park, seeing who could find the biggest dandelion, or even just laying in the grass for hours naming the different shapes we saw in the clouds, we all had a reason to ââ¬Å"love the to dayâ⬠we were in and love it anyway we wanted to. Everyone has had those certain on going fears when they were younger. As a child I was deathly scared of monsters. I believed that monsters lived underneath my bed, and that they could come through my bedroom window, and make a feast out of me. The only way for me to go to sleep feeling safe in my own bedroom would be if my mom would spray water at the window, and underneath my bed. I thought the water to be a magical potion to rid monsters forever from entering and living in my bedroom. The song ââ¬Å"Lullabyâ⬠, by Jack Johnson begins the with the lyrics, When youre so lonely lying in bed Nightââ¬â¢s closed its eyes but you cant rest your head Everyoneââ¬â¢s sleeping all through the house You wish you could dream but forgot to somehow Sing this lullaby to yourself Sing this lullaby to yourself. (1-6) This song relates a lot to how my fears as a child would make me feel. Even though the ââ¬Å"lullabyâ⬠tha t I may have sung to myself was not exactly a lullaby, it was always something to help me to feel safer and comforted from my fears. In my case that ââ¬Å"lullabyâ⬠for me was the magic water potion that rid away all monsters. Every spring the bruises, dust, scars, mouth guards, goggles, beaten up sticks, and the tan lines that only a lacrosse player could possibly achieve getting, take over my life once again. Lacrosse is one of those sports that have an addicting affect on you. Whether it is during the season or off season lacrosse is still a topic that is thrilling to talk about. In the song ââ¬Å"Down together,â⬠by the Refreshments the chorus reminds me a lot my lacrosse team experiences. So lets go down together Down together Down together Together Lets go down together Down together Down together Together. (23-30 In lacrosse everything is done with a team outlook. If the defense does not put all of their effort into keeping a girl away from the goal, the team as a whole suffers from their little mistake. Playing on a team sport has made me realize what being on a team really means, and what affect it has on everyone. Going to state this year has showed me that up until that one game i f one girl goes down, we all go down as a whole; we go down together as a team.Mmy most recent summers are my most cherished memories. To sum up the one thing responsible for my endless memories would be Jewish summer camp. Every summer I would excitedly begin to pack my entire life away for a month and a half, and little did I know what new and exciting experiences would become of themselves. The song ââ¬Å"Save Tonightâ⬠, by Eagle Eye Cherry is one song that can be sure to define what effect camp had on me every summer. Save tonight and fight the break of dawn Come tomorrow, Tomorrow Ill be gone. Theres a log on the fire and it burns like me for you, Tomorrow comes with one desire to take me away its true. It aint easy to say goodbye darling please dont start to cry Cause girl you know Ive got to go, oh Lord I wish it wasnt so. (13-24) Going to camp had me on my toes every second. From being initiated and initiating others in ways that cannot be said, going down a hill called Suicide Hill, in a luggage cart, discovering new meanings to words, sneaking out to see that special someone, and most importantly making friendships that last a lifetime. Camp is one of those experiences that will keep you talking non stop all year long about the inside jokes and eventful days, until the next summer would come bringing more to talk about. Every summer I would never want to come home knowing that ââ¬Å"tomorrow Iââ¬â¢ll be gone.â⬠When I was 6 years old thinking what life would hold for me in six years seemed so far in the future, that I never thought I would make it. The truth of the matter is I actually did make it to 16, but now looking back on the past ten years, time has seemed to fly right past my eyes. When I think about where I want to be in ten years is a scary thought for me, knowing that those ten years will too fly right past my eyes. The funny thing about the future is that you always tend to think and hope for one thing, when in reality, the complete opposite happens. The song ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t Stop Believingâ⬠, by Journey really reminds me to keep on believing for the best in my future. Workin hard to get my fill Everybody wants a thrill Payin anything to roll the dice Just one more time Some will win Some will lose Some were born to sing the blues Oh, the movie never ends It goes on and on and on and on Dont stop believin Hold on to the feelin Streetlights, people Dont stop believin Hol d on Streetlights, people. (13-26) In the future I know that I will face hardships, but no matter what the circumstances are I must believe in what I want. I can talk of all of the memories that I hope to have in ten years, when the truth is whatââ¬â¢s the fun in coming up with unreal memories instead of just waiting to find out what life has in store for you. In ten years there is one definite thing that I know that I want to have. That one thing is to have all of memories from my past and present; every single detail, never forgetting one moment. Memories are the most important thing to hold on to. They are something to laugh about, cry about, and sometimes to become angry about. Even today I am creating a memory for my future that I will be able to look back onto. Without having all of the memories in your future, you can never learn from past experiences to make better for the future. The song ââ¬Å"Caught by the Riverâ⬠, by Doves, reminds me to not let go of everything that I have learned in my future. son what are you doing? you learned a hard lesson when you stood by the water you and i were so full of love and hope would you give it all up now? would you give in just to spite them all? and you give it all away would you give it all away now? dont let it come apart dont want to see you come apart. (11-20) It is important for me in my future to not give away everything that I have learned and hold onto all of my memories. From the days that seem perfect, to the days that have never ending misfortunes, there is almost one song to capture and describe every single one of the moments. Songs and their melodies have an incredible way of taking you back to a time that is most memorable. Songââ¬â¢s have the ability to make you feel as if you are the only one that exists for those couple of minutes. Whether you want a song to fit your free spirited mood, or songs that will make you tear up with every word sung, there is a song to capture every feelin g. Song writers use their own emotions and words to allow you to create a whole new story of your own relating to the song. Songs have much more meaning inside them than just the catchy melody; they make a lasting impression.

Spanish Idioms of the Form Tener Noun
Spanish Idioms of the Form Tener Noun In Spanish, you can have it all. Thats because tener, the verb meaning to have in the sense of to possess (haber is the equivalent of the English auxiliary verb to have) is frequently used in idioms to refer to a wide range of emotions and other states of being. While we may say in English that you are hungry or a person is thirsty, in Spanish we say the equivalent of you have hunger or someone has thirst. Thus tienes hambre means you are hungry and tiene sed means he/she is thirsty. Tener Phrases Often Preferred to Adjectives Most of the tener noun idioms arent hard to learn, as they generally make sense as long as you know what the noun part of the phrase means. What can be challenging is learning when their use is preferred. For example, you may be aware that there is an adjective, hambriento, that means hungry. But youre unlikely to hear a sentence such as estoy hambriento (just as you arent likely to hear a native English speaker say, I have hunger, even though the sentence would be understood and grammatically correct). Usually, the tener noun idioms are translated using the English verb to be followed by an adjective. Following are some of the most common such uses of tener. tener cabeza (para), to have a mind (for): Tu hermana tiene cabeza para los negocios. (Your sister has a mind for business.)tener calor, to be hot: Siempre tienes calor. (Youre always hot.)tener carià ±o, to be fond: Pablo tiene carià ±o a Marà a. (Paul is fond of Mary.)tener celos, to be jealous: Tengo celos a mi hermana. (Im jealous of my sister.)tener claro, to be clear or sure:à Tenemos claro que podemos ayudar a mejorar nuestra sociedad. (Were sure that we can help improve our society.)à tener complejos, to be mentally insecure:à Tengo complejos con mi estilo de vida actual. (Im insecure about my current lifestyle.)tener cuidado, to be careful: Espero que tengas cuidado con el libro. (I hope youre careful with the book.)tener la culpa, to be guilty or at fault: Mi padre dijo que tengo la culpa. (My father said its my fault.)tener derecho, to have the right: Tengo derecho de votar. (I have the right to vote.)tener efecto, to have an effect: La hipnosis tiene efecto en e l cerebro. (Hypnosis does not have an effect on the brainl) tener à ©xito, to be successful: El jefe tiene un gran à ©xito. (The boss is very successful.)tener frà o, to be cold: Hace viento. Tengo frà o. (Its windy. Im cold.)tener ganas de infinitive, to be in the mood for, to feel like doing something: Tengo ganas de comer una hamburguesa. (I feel like eating a hamburger.)tener hambre, to be hungry: No ha comido. Tiene hambre. (He hasnt eaten. Hes hungry.)tener ilusià ³n, to be enthusiastic: Tiene ilusià ³n por viajar a California. (Hes enthusiastic about traveling to California.)tener miedo a noun, to be afraid of: Mi hermana tiene miedo a los serpientes. (My sister is afraid of snakes.)tener miedo de infinitive, to be afraid of: Tiene miedo de nadar. (Hes afraid of swimming.)tener prisa, to be in a hurry: Tengo prisa. El teatro comienza a las ocho. (Im in a hurry. The play begins at 8.)tener razà ³n, to be right: El cliente siempre tiene razà ³n. (The customer is always right.)tener sed, to be thirsty: He trabajado mucho. Ten go sed. (Ive worked a lot. Im thirsty.) tener sueà ±o, to be tired or sleepy: No has dormido. Tendrs sueà ±o. (You havent slept. You must be tired.)tener suerte, to be lucky: Mi hijo ganà ³ la loterà a. Tiene mucha suerte. (My son won the lottery. Hes very lucky.)tener vergà ¼enza, to be ashamed: Matà © a mi amigo. Tengo mucha vergà ¼enza. (I killed my friend. Im so ashamed.) Because tener is used so often to indicate mental states, it can be used by itself to ask someone how he or she is doing, especially if you suspect something is wrong: à ¿Quà © tienes? Whats up with you? Note that the adjective mucho or mucha can be used with the noun portion of the idiom to indicate degree as is expressed by very in English: Tengo sed, Im thirsty. Tengo mucha sed, Im very thirsty. Note also that tener is irregular in its conjugation.

Biography of Dalton Trumbo and the Hollywood Blacklist
Biography of Dalton Trumbo and the Hollywood Blacklist ââ¬Å"Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party?â⬠It was a question asked of dozens of people brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in the 1940s and 1950s, and in October of 1947, it was put to Dalton Trumbo, one of Hollywoodââ¬â¢s best-known and highest-paid screenwriters. Trumbo and nine others- dubbed the ââ¬ËHollywood Tenââ¬â¢- refused to answer the question on First Amendment grounds This stand for principle came at a steep price: federal prison terms, fines, and worst of all, a place on theà Hollywood blacklist, a prohibition that kept them from working in their chosen profession. Dalton Trumbo spent much of the rest of his life climbing back to the top. The fall from grace was particularly hard for Trumbo, who hadà struggled to establish a writing careerà and had risen to the upper ranks of the Hollywood studio structure less than a decade earlier. Early Life James Dalton Trumbo was born in Montrose, Colorado on December 5, 1905 and grew up in the nearby town of Grand Junction. His father, Orus, was hardworking but struggled to achieve financial stability. Orus and Maud Trumbo often had difficulty supporting Dalton and his sisters. Trumbo became interested in writing early in life, working as a cub reporter for the Grand Junction newspaper while still in high school. He studied literature at the University of Colorado with the hope of becoming a novelist. Then, in 1925, Orus decided to move the family to Los Angeles in the hopes of finding more lucrative work, and Dalton decided to follow. Within a year of the move, Orus died of a blood disorder. Dalton got what he hoped would be a short-term job at the Davis Perfection Bread Company to help support the family. He ended up staying for eight years, working on novels and short stories in his spare moments. Few were published. His big break came in 1933, when he was offered a job writing for the Hollywood Spectator. This led to a job reading scripts for Warner Brothers in 1934, and by 1935, he was hired as a junior script writer in the B-Picture Unit. Later that year, his first novel, Eclipse, was published. Early Career For the next few years, Trumbo hopped from studio to studio as he mastered his new craft. By the late 1940s, he was earning as much as $4.000 a week- a major improvement over the $18 a week he had earned at the Perfection Bread Company. He wrote over a dozen movies between 1936 and 1945, including Five Came Back, Kitty Foyle, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, and A Guy Named Joe. His personal life also flourished. In 1938, he married a former drive-in waitress named Cleo Fincher, and they soon had a family: Christopher, Mitzi, and Nikola. Trumbo bought an isolated ranch in Ventura County as a retreat from Hollywood life. Joining the Communist Party Trumbo had a reputation in Hollywood as an outspoken critic of social injustice. Having been a member of the working class for much of his life, he was passionate about labor rights and civil rights. Like many of his liberal-leaning Hollywood peers, he was eventually drawn towards Communism. His decision to join the Communist Party in December 1943 was a casual one. While not a Marxist, he agreed with many of its general principles. ââ¬Å"People joined the Communist Party for very good, humane reasons, in my view,â⬠he once said. The early 1940s was the high point for Party membership in the United States; Trumbo was one of more than 80,000 ââ¬Å"card-carryingâ⬠Communists of the era. He loathed the meetings, which he described as ââ¬Å"dull beyond description and about as revolutionary in purpose as Wednesday evening testimonial services at the Christian Science Church,â⬠but he passionately believed in the Partyââ¬â¢s right to exist under a Constitution that afforded Americans the freedom to assemble and to speak. The Hollywood Ten Trumboââ¬â¢s affiliation was well-known at the time, and he, like other Hollywood Communist Party members, was under FBI surveillance for several years. In September 1947, the family was at their remote ranch when FBI agents arrived with a subpoena to appear before the HUAC. Trumboââ¬â¢s son Christopher, then seven, asked what was happening. ââ¬Å"We are Communists,â⬠Trumbo said, ââ¬Å"and I have to go to Washington to answer questions about my Communism.â⬠About 40 members of the Hollywood community were issued subpoenas. Most simply complied with HUAC investigators, but Trumbo, along with fellow screenwriters Alvah Bessie, Lester Cole, Albert Maltz, Ring Lardner, Jr., Samuel Ornitz, and John Howard Lawson, directors Edward Dmytryk and Herbert Biberman, and producer Adrian Scott, decided not comply. In a contentious hearing on October 28, 1947, Trumbo repeatedly refused to answer HUAC membersââ¬â¢ questions on First Amendment grounds. For his intransigence, he was found in contempt of Congress. He was later convicted on the charges and sentenced to a year in prison. Prisoner #7551 It took three years for the case to work through the appeals process, but Trumboââ¬â¢s actual punishment began as soon as he returned from the hearings. He and his peers were blacklisted from working for any of the major studios and shunned by many in the Hollywood community. It was a hard time for the family both financially and emotionally, as Cleo Trumbo told People in a 1993 interview. ââ¬Å"We were broke, and we werenââ¬â¢t invited anywhere. People dropped away.â⬠With legal fees draining his savings, Trumbo returned to his B-movie roots and began churning out scripts under various pseudonyms for small studios. He worked right up until the day in June 1950 when he shaved off his signature mustache and flew east to begin his year-long prison term. Trumbo, now known as Prisoner #7551 was sent to the Federal Correctional Institution in Ashland, Kentucky. After almost 25 years of ceaseless work, Trumbo said that he felt ââ¬Å"a sense of almost exhilarating reliefâ⬠when the doors closed behind him. His stint at Ashland was filled with reading, writing, and light duties. Good behavior won him early release in April 1951. Breaking the Blacklist Trumbo moved the family to Mexico City after his release, hoping to get away from the notoriety and to stretch their reduced income a little further. They returned in 1954. Mitzi Trumbo later described the harassment of her new elementary school classmates when they found out who she was. Throughout the period, Trumbo continued to write for the screenplay black market. He would end up writing around 30 scripts under various pen names between 1947 and 1960. In one two-year span, he wrote 18 scripts at an average payout of $1,700 each. Some of these scripts were very successful. Among his work during this period was the classic romantic comedy Roman Holiday (1953) and The Brave One (1956). Both won Academy Awards for writing- awards that Trumbo couldnââ¬â¢t accept. Trumbo often passed on work to other struggling blacklisters, not only out of generosity but alsoà to flood the market with so many black-market scripts that the whole blacklist would look like a joke. Later Life and Legacy The blacklist continued to weaken throughout the 1950s. In 1960, director Otto Preminger insisted Trumbo receive a credit for writing the script for the Biblical blockbuster Exodus, and actor Kirk Douglas publicly announced Trumbo had written the script for the historical epic Spartacus. Trumbo adapted the script from a novel by Howard Fast, himself a blacklisted author. Trumbo was readmitted to the Writers Union and from that point on, he was able to write under his own name. In 1975, he received a belated Oscar statuette for The Brave One. He continued to work until he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1973, and died in Los Angeles on September 10, 1976 at the age of 70. By the time Trumbo died, the blacklist was long broken.
